Booked a Sunday lunch for a party of 12 people to celebrate a 60th birthday. Turned up only to be told that the kitchen is closed and there is no chef. Also told there was no booking made although I have the emailed confirmation! Apparently, there was a party there the previous evening which went on well into the early hours so it was clear that the staff simply failed to turn up. No one had the decency to inform me and if it hadn't been for The Lock and Weir next door (which was excellent food, service and price by the way) we would have been stranded! Shame on you Chequers and for anyone thinking of booking this pub, well, they just don't deserve the custom - go the The Lock and Weir next door, you wont be disappointed.

Thought that this might be a nice spot on the river to go for our wedding anniversary, shame I didn't read the reviews beforehand! First impressions were not particularly good as the decor was a touch shabby and not particularly homely, probably not been touched much since the 70's. We were shown to a table (actually had the pick of the restaurant) and made our selection. Whilst waiting for our meal we had a little look around at the old photos on the wall and the young waiter/barman came over and explained the pictures and gave us a bit of a local history lesson, the highlight of the evening. Back at the table my wife noticed something floating in her drink, maggots? We were offered a replacement which seemed fine but a little latter we spotted more in the replacement, we suspect that they had come from the ice as they were not immediately evident. The young lad took it away and we heard him shout more maggots (we hadn't hinted what we thought they were) followed by more shouting from other staff. Sadly no apology or explanation was given, just left for the junior waiter (18?) to deal with!!! Anyway the starter came which was not too bad but the waiter came and took our plates just as my wife was finishing off hers, think she was rather shocked as the plate disappeared from under her fork. Then onto the mains which were somewhat disappointing with greasy frozen chips and a rather bland and dry chicken breast with cheese & mushrooms for me and a rather sad looking piece of tuna for my wife. Well meal over and bill paid (sorry no tip) it was time to go and as we walked out the place was suddenly devoid of any staff, I think they were avoiding us despite us giving little in the way of complaint. Very poor management that cannot apologize to customers and leave it to very junior staff. Will not be going back.

Having worked in the pub for four years, up until last year and drinking there since. I can not understand how you would think the landlady was drunk. She has a young child herself and is running a buisness those two reasons alone ar enough to throw your comment out the window. As a chef i will also argue the case of everything tasting of meat. I understand not everyone knows good food when they taste it and you are clearly a prime example of this. I would be rather annoyed if the gravy didnt have stock in it, thats what makes a gravy a gravy. So im guessing you would have preffered bisto. Excellent. Ill keep that in mind when opening my restaurant. Not. As for roast potatoes tasting of meat this is simply due to the dripping, and let me tell you. In four years of working there, with the same chef you are the first person to comlain about the roast potatoes to my knowlege. One peice of advice. Stay at home from now on until you apriceate good food, great staff and hard work. I rest my case.
